Word of Beard

To the saints who are faithful in Christ Jesus everywhere - you are loved on purpose.
Grace. Peace. (1:2)
Blessed. Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. (1:3)
He chose us. Holy. Blameless. Love. (1:4)
Adoption. Good pleasure. (1:5)
Grace bestowed on us. (1:6)
Redemption. Forgiveness. Riches of his grace. (1:7)
Abound. All wisdom and insight. (1:8)
Making known. Good pleasure. Purposed. (1:9)
Bring together on earth and heaven. (1:10)
Chosen. Purpose. Works all things. (1:11)
Hoped. Praise of his glory. (1:12)
Gospel. Salvation. Sealed. Promised Holy Spirit. (1:13)
Inheritance. Redemption. (1:14)
In these 14 verses of Paul's letter to the Church surrounding Ephesus he overwhelms us with the overflow of the Lords character - He floods with His intentional and gracious love for us. Crazy!

Seriously. Just read through the list above describing what God, through the life of Christ, offers us.

Not only that but all with preemptive purpose and design. Catch that? It's actually been Gods will from before the beginning of time to pull us into His vision of eternity. Check this out:
Chose us before the foundation of the world. (1:4)
Predestined. Through Christ. Good pleasure of his will. (1:5)
Praise and glory of his grace. (1:6)
He caused to abound to us. (1:8)
Making known to us the mystery of his will. According to his good pleasure. Purposed in him. (1:9)
Fullness of times. Bring together in Christ. (1:10)
Chosen. Predestined. Purpose of the One. Works all things according to his will. (1:11)
Promised Holy Spirit. (1:13)

It's not chaos and condemnation that propels the Creator onward in purpose and mission. It isn't anger and distance and disillusion. No.

From eternity past the Father, the Son and the Spirit have found nothing but pleasure in fostering and securing redemption for us. Through the eternal plan and cost of the life of Christ and the seal of the Spirit we are drawn in as heirs, adopted into the family of God the Father with love according to what pleases Him in His Holiness and Perfection.

He chose us and invites us into the divine mystery of His will.

You and I are loved. Read Ephesians 1:1-14. Read it again. Read it once again. You have been loved. You are being loved on. You will be loved forever. Now tell me that isn't just exactly what your heart truly desires?

Uber-Spatial Unity

In Ephesians 4:1 the author, Apostle Paul, acknowledges two Spatial contexts in motion: Physical and Spiritual (both being Relational in nature).

As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.

Every follower of Christ, through salvation, is equipped to live a life worthy of their new place in Fathers kingdom, His family. In fact, living a worthy life isn't something earned but a lifestyle overflowing with the eternal work Jesus HAS done and IS doing in the Christian life. Fantastic!

This new life, this worthy lifestyle according to Paul, takes place simultaneously on two Spatial fronts:
  1. Physical Space: (4:2-3) Paul urges the Asian Church to foster and share in awesome community with one-another. Being gentle and humble, patient and intentionally peaceful and united...these take shape alongside other human beings - Physically and thus relational, mental and emotional.
  2. Spiritual Space: (4:4-6) Paul goes on to urge unity in the Spiritual realm. A one-ness that encompasses the Body of believers everywhere, the One-ness of The Father, Jesus and The Spirit in the Trinity. The One-ness of Gods Sovereignty in and through everything - of faith and baptism and hope. A Spiritual Unity that surpasses every physical border and boundary.
I wouldn't be off the mark in saying that this Spatial Unity is just as important in the Body today, the Church (universal and local), as it was at the time of Pauls Epistle to the Ephesians.

Uber-Spatial Unity is a call, a charge, an urgent and refreshed word to the Body to be united physically beyond denominations, styles, personal preferences and expressive flavors in such a way that the Love of Christ would be on display on every street corner and in every home in between.

Sounds uber-idealistic I suppose. Yeah, it is.

Uber-Physical Unity only works as it is partnered with Uber-Spiritual Unity. That the very heart of Spatial One-ness that Paul urges for (4:4-6, Philip. 1:27-28, 1 Cor. 12) is first found in the glue of the Spiritual Space holding the very Physical realm together.

Every Physically-spatial relationship is first impacted by Spiritually-spatial truth.

As much as you and I can imagine, discern and intentionally foster spiritual unity on the major doctrinal issues with brothers and sisters in our communities we ought to then be intentional in fostering physical unity for the sake of the world.

Where is the Spirit encouraging you to be unified more and more both in spirit with your Savior and in relationship with the Church?

Word of Beard

'On the 24th day of the eleventh month I had a vision...the word of the Lord came to [me]...During the night I had a vision...
'He showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord...
'Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel.'
What happens next is what has happened to every man and woman on earth for whom Christ is discovered as reality. Joshua here, in Zechariah's vision, is a symbol of Israel.

Israel was distant from the Lord, rebellious, soaking up the scraps of life and religion and self gratification. But their story doesn't end in that false-satisfaction.
'The angel said to those who were standing before him, "Take of his filthy clothes." "See, I have taken away your sin and I will put rich garments on you."'
Sound familiar?

The journey the LORD shares with Israel is fulfilled in Christ and His relationship with all believers. It's an ancient journey, an ancient process where God removed the filth, the confusion, the missteps, the sin and both symbolically and spiritually would take Israel as His people again and again (Hebrews 10 speaks to this repetition and final reconciling).

That removal of the old and replacement with the New as Paul notes in 2 Cor. 5:17. That Incredible Regeneration, that Eternal Reconciliation is not new to Christs purpose with Israel, however, it is Final!

The absolute final removal of the Old ineffective human ideas of spiritual wholeness and the absolute final adoption of the New AND 2000 years later we just celebrated that final victory over sin and death in Christ on Easter! Fantastic!
'Then I said, "Put a clean turban on his head."
I'm aware that we won't be wearing turbans as a religio-fashion statement here in the Western Evangeleical Church (though I wouldn't be opposed, with a fine robe and effeminate Toms-like shoes to match...), but this particular headpiece has serious significance. Check out the priestly garments in Exodus 28:36 and you'll discover that this was inscribed with the phrase, 'Holy is the Lord.'

Now that's a turban worth wearing.

The reality for you and I is that we are inscribed with that very Truth in a much more personal way. Every Christ-follower carries within them the very Spirit of the Living God (1 John 4:13-16). Hmm, what shall I prefer as a sign of my personal connection to the Lord of the Universe - turban OR Spirit of God? (Now if you prefer the turban you have a crippling addiction to religion and I can't help you, but the Spirit can. Step away from the turban and spend time in commune with Jesus.)
'This is what the LORD Almighty says: "If you walk in my ways and keep my requirements...I will give you a place among these standing here."'
He frees us from the weight and grime and false sense of reality and hope that our own dreams and creations and sins offer us.

He places on everyone who trusts in Christ (John 3:16, Romans 10:9-10) a new wardrobe sourced in His Love. A new clothing line defined by Faith, Hope and Love. A new attitude (Philippians 2). A new everything as we journey with Him.

In fact, as we embark on this lifelong journey of walking in His ways and so standing among His people / His family, we experience both the One Time removal of our dirty clothes AND the ongoing cleansing and renewal that comes from living in a place that isn't yet fully reconciled to Him.

If you haven't yet seen the vision of Christ making all things new in your life and so removing the old I suggest you spend time in prayer and the Word not only painting this picture of spiritual reality, but truly believing it at that.

Read Zechariah 3 for this piece of his vision.

The Modern Church Leader

I recently rediscovered my StrengthsFinder results. I hadn't attended to this information in nearly two years after much life change and that relating to these findings and their outworking (or not) in my life and ministry. Wow.

So I've been reading a book on leadership loaded with 25 Principles for Leadership that Matter (subtitle). There really is some fantastic stuff in there. Much of which resonates within my 33 year old, white, North American, small town, 2014 time and space, middle-lower class cultured experience.

Catch that? I didn't either until somewhere around the 14th principle. His incredible experience and wisdom on leadership totally makes sense if the the Church is to function like a modern day Non-Profit Org with a CEO. A leader who is great at:
- Preaching/Speaking
- Managing
- Administration
- Finances
- Politics
- Counseling
- Writing
- Media Leveraging
- Reading everything under the sun (and Scripture too)
- Visioneering
- Sole-decision making
- Carrying the weight of an Organization...alone.
- The singular-appointed Torch-bearer of the mission

Oh yeah, and the leader totally manages his/her Time well. They disciple their families with the best of 'em, are home for birthdays and anniversaries and manage to make it to every single meeting and event and program the Church offers, fosters and convicts the body to partake in...

So I recently discovered my StrengthFinder results and found it refreshing that I'm not even remotely wired to function as a CEO in the modern day local church. Not that this test defines who I am but it's amazing how it confirms what I've been relearning and rediscovering about the Church as it unfolds and takes shape in the Scriptures and so in my own life.

In Acts the Twelve gathered their disciples and so instituted another level of leadership in the Body. Maybe this was the Deacon, maybe it was the Elder, doesn't really matter, what does matter is what the Twelve decided was most important in their role in fostering the first-fruits of The Movement of the The Way.
"It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the Word of God in order to wait on tables (finances, politics, media-wrangling, Microsoft Office...). Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom (sharing the burden of leadership with trustworthy brothers and sisters in Christ, differently gifted and full of the Spirit). We will turn this responsibility over to them and give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the Word." Acts 6
I'd say we've added a few things to the list of 'leadership' wouldn't you? Culture and Context aside, we've heaped an unnecessary mountain of burdens onto one man...no wonder burnout is epidemic in the Church.

Listen, if we are the Church and we are first and foremost His family, as I tell my kids on a daily basis, then it is up to us to re-claim the culture of the Church back from the mindset/attitude of Corporationism. My immediate family is not a business, nor is it an organization, and my extended family (the Church) is to be living out His mission in like manner. Yes in unity and in organized form but we have to ask ourselves if our current forms look and act more like business' than families?

What if. What if we did totally reevaluate and reestablish norms in the Family of God?

This would begin with those called and so Gifted to lead the Church. If leaders aren't willing to change the language and dynamic of the Pastor who singularly holds the reigns on the vision for the untold number of believers living in the cracks and crevices of our culture and so equip all believers to live according to their appointment as apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers (beyond paid and degreed staff) and each with a local vision for their family, neighborhood and workplace...if we aren't willing to equip and release our disciples to cast their own vision in Christ then we will continue on receiving the very same results that has brought the American church to it's present small place in culture.

So I found my StregthsFinder results and realized that being filled with a healthy dose of Rebellious Visioneering in the Church today is probably a role that lends itself to the Early Church movement more than we lend credit.

If God is One as Paul notes in Ephesians, and We, the Church are One with Him as Paul notes in Corinthians, then it stands to reason that it takes more than one man to carry a local vision for a local Body. Yes we need a King to follow, and last I checked that is most notably Christ, while our local kings in the Church possibly ought to look more like heads of families, elders of the community who are banded together and so gather to lead, innovate, brainstorm, pray, study the word, struggle with community sin and struggles, make disciples and invite more and more into that inner-circle of leadership. Co-CEO's if you will.

Are you willing to put your form of 'church' on the table and evaluate in light of the early movement? Are you as a leader willing to truly exegete your culture and change your life as a missionary accordingly? Are we as the Church willing to tear down those forms that model Corporationism while our mouths preach disciple -making?

Read Ephesians 4 and 1 Corinthians 12 once again - leadership in the Church and the movement of the Body truly is a beautiful thing that needs to be reevaluated in the context and rhythm of our current systems and forms and definitions of the Church.

Quality AND Quantity 3

You know what, let's go ahead and put some healthy parameters on Quantity and Quality just to make things interesting. Let's extract some key statutes The LORD asks of the Israelites as He sends them on their journey to possess the Land He has Promised them.

As it pertains to Quality:
  • Fear the LORD your God
  • Walk in all His ways
  • Love Him
  • Serve the LORD your God with all your heart and soul
  • Observe the LORD's commands and decrees given for your own good

As it pertains to Quantity:
  • Fear the LORD your God
  • Walk in all His ways
  • Love Him
  • Serve the LORD your God with all your heart and soul
  • Observe the LORD's commands and decrees given for your own good
Following the call to journey steadfastly as a family unit (an oikos) with parents training and equipping their children to inquire of, seek after, know, serve, love and worship the LORD (Deut. 6), the Lord follows up with the above attributes of an extended family, a chosen people on mission together.

Together moving towards the Promised Land. Moving towards a greater fulfillment of the very Covenant God made with Abraham and fulfills in Christ.

The question the above parameters sets before us is not whether we are engaging in each one (Fear, Service, etc.) - but whether or not we are engaging with those we're most directly and divinely entrusted with daily?

Enjoy fostering some immediate prayer, discernment and practice in relation to each aspect above.

Read Deuteronomy 10:11 - 11:32. Dig into a Gospel and note the Quality and Quantity of the life of Jesus with His nearest and dearest.

Quality OR Quantity 2

I appreciate the tension the topic of Quality/Quantity brings with it.

Each one of us will process with our own immediate context to filter the concepts of Q/Q through, and for many of us this stirs up frustration and the like. We assume that only a dreamer can have it both ways, an idealist out of touch with reality (Gwyneth P. syndrome I suppose). That the author is unaware of what he is really saying. I am a fool, that I can testify to and yet I believe this is a conversation worth processing.

Let's do two things to help make this idea of living on mission with your framily (not the Sprint plan), through the lens of Quality/Quantity, more palatable.

1. Let's put some spiritually set-apart meat on this (awkward phrase but you can roll with it). In the last post we noted Deuteronomy 6:4-9. Read it again and highlight the key spaces God decrees (:1) that we walk in with our families (both immediate and extended as we move into the greater family plan according the Jesus and His Church).

He highlights this call to 'Love the Lord your God' repeatedly (7:12, 8:6, 10:12-22, 11:1-32 etc).

Not only does he cover every moment of the day (Quantity) but the LORD notes that this time is spent enjoying Him with those dearest to us (Quality).

We see this graphically displayed in the NT in both Acts 2 & 4. I know, I know, I know...this 2014 and that type of giving and receiving and sharing in life together is nonsense here in the Western world you and I thrive in. But what if the principle is the same even if the physical isn't?

What if the principle of sharing in life together in such overwhelming ways is the same? I spend time with your kids when you're at work because we're family. You spend time with my wife (ahem, ladies) when I'm gone in order to share in the journey of life. That we walk together at sun-up. We share stories of Jesus in passing and in sitting. Over coffee and in the moment we regard both Quantity and Quality as equal infusers in our lives on mission (and by the way, on mission is simply another way of saying intentionally, purpose-filled, directed towards the very things that glorify God and His mission...)

We rearrange our work schedules to best of our ability to be home more. We make lunch plans with our spouses and newborns. We disciple in the dining room so our 6 year can witness, partake and be loved on in the process. We scratch another volunteer opportunity off the list and instead simply sit on our porch and catch a few words with the neighbors walking by.

I don't care what it is practically, that's for you to discern but we both know if you could, if time and space and money allowed...you would do something different.

There it is: What would you do different with your family time and family energy - your family mission - if you could do anything at all?

2. Let's put some parameters on Quality and Quantity so we know when we're being work-a-holics or simply surviving. So we can discern apathy and indifference from peace and patience.

Actually, let's not. At least not right now and not in detail. Once we attach specific acts to Quality and hours to Quantity we begin the journey into the legalities of such concepts instead of the freedoms intended.

So for conversations sake since I have a personal word quota I'm shooting for here, let's just say that in order for you and your family to truly define these and live them out well you've got to be willing to throw your personal goals, vision, dreams, calendar, and wallets on the table and redefine what is most important through the lens of Biblical familihood and eternity in light of the mission and message of Christ.

Simple right.

This isn't just a matter of reading through Ephesians 5 and doing a marital gut-check, though it might be that. Nor is it pouring over the qualities of Godly men and women found in the Pastoral Epistles though these are fantastic for every believer to do as each one of us ought to be leading/influencing others in some capacity.

No, this is a matter of sitting in the Gospel. Resting in the story of God. Pressing into and shaking together your actual life with the life of the man/woman truly chasing after Gods very heart.

Read the sermon on the mount in Matt 5 and then check out the 5 key attributes of life God sought from the Israelites in Deut. 10:12-13...and :14-22 for that matter.

Look. The idea is to wrestle with your heart, your sin, your current reality (which you simply might not be able to control in this season, but make it a season if at all possible, don't make it a lifestyle). Yes, it's a loose concept and will vary from family to family depending on your gift mix, culture, desires, the Lords desires, opportunities and the like. Though it's a generic conversation of Q/Q - it's pertinent, it's vital and it may be the difference between a healthy marriage, a mending marriage, and no marriage at all. A healthy daughter or a daughter seeking 'quality' elsewhere. A healthy son, or a son without confidence but a dad who certainly can be engaged once a week in that scheduled sabbaths moment of need.

I hope you're offended in someway, I hope you feel as though you're falling short as I have. Of course only with the hope that you reevaluate and discern Q/Q with the abounding love and wisdom of the Father. That you grow in knowledge of Him and His desires for you and your family and friends and neighbors and disciples. That you might 'discern what is best and may be pure and blameless' in your lives (Philippians 1).

If it means downsizing your home so mom can be with the kids more often, or that you might tag team the work schedule in fresh ways then just do it, you won't regret not having that extra living room or tv or whatever thing it might be.

If it means opening up your life for the first time to a trustworthy local Body of believers in order that your kids might not be alone as much while you work to put food on the table, then please seek that out now.

Get creative. Define well.

I'll be honest, I did not intend to evaluate the Quantity/Quality paradigm in my life. It was thrust upon me in recent months. For the first time in years I have gotten to witness the 10am meltdown my daughter has as she pleads her near-death pleas for a snack - never saw that on daddies perfect day home because I was too busy coddling her and sneaking her treats. And I'll be honest, when she did meltdown, I had no patience for it on my only day home.

I have gotten to sit quietly with my son. Both of us in the same room simply reading to ourselves without vying for one another's affections. Just being. Sharing in His affections silently and without regret.

I have eaten more meals with my family, changed more diapers, told more stories about the wild reality of God in History and in our lives, and gone to bed at the same time as my awesome wife...than ever before.

I yet disciple several young men, I disciple my son, I am a student wrapping up a degree, I am a part time worker, my wife is a part time worker, we throw parties, visit family, connect with friends, huddle (probably not what you think), cuddle (probably what you think), blog, write kids books, work on my house and my car, and longboard. I wouldn't say apathy is the name of my game. But neither is  careerism.

Re-discern your definition of Quality & Quantity.

3/28/14

Quality OR Quantity...You Choose

What if it didn't have to be a choice? What if it weren't Quality over Quantity?

Let me narrow the context a bit. Family. What if time with your family weren't straddling the line between Qualitative and Quantitative? What if being a family on mission together weren't simply a programmed event for small group nights or once a year service projects with the Church raking leaves and digging ditches...

The Sabbath doesn't exist as an excuse to spend one day of the week with your wife and your children and maybe your close friends and disciples (unless they're off limits on your day of rest as well...). This day wasn't commanded and gifted as an excuse to pack out the other 6 days to the hilt with actual ministry and kingdom building away from them.

When we view life and ministry this way (either vocational ministry or volunteer) we unnecessarily live in a Quantity/Quality paradigm. In this world we give our families limited time and in that time we exhaust ourselves by giving them every spare minute of that day both at home and with Quality special events while your home. You miss out on the normal flow of your kids moods, attention spans, schedule because you're cramming them into your day off. You miss out on a regular rhythm with your wife because you're both focused on having one really good day together with and for the kids.

I know we're single parents and work a ton just to stay alive. I know we have busy seasons at school, at work, in our personal lives. I know there are plenty of exceptions and let's be honest, most of them are attributed to our brokenness: divorce, greed, lust for more, dissatisfaction, proving ourselves, feeling valuable, false sense of peace and satisfaction, consumer culture, misunderstanding of the nature of the Body of Christ etc. Some of these things will carry effects that may not free us in this lifetime to truly wrestle with Quality/Quantity, our lot is cast. But let's not let that define a healthy paradigm for everyone who is able to model and impact the coming generations of the Church, our kids!

You and I have the ability to define Quantity and Quality time with our framilies (thanks Sprint). We can create a lifestyle that actually assumes that Gods directives in Deut. 6 were/are true and real and still effectual. That what Paul coaches Titus in regarding the older generations teaching the younger (Titus 2) that these things are daily, that they are true, that they happen in the course of life in real time, not in programs and explosive moments.

We can say that Quality time with our family looks like both the special meals, trips to the zoo and yearly vacations as well as having dinner with our family nightly. That Quantity isn't simply one single 24/hr. period in our week but is spread about with normal moments of reading the paper while our kids play, putting them down for naps, hanging out with our disciples over coffee and orange juice and neighborhood bbq's and outreach together on mission as a family.

Maybe as Bob Goff recommends, just do away with your minute by minute scheduling and make yourself available. Just be available and be available both for and with your families.

Why not do more life (ministry) out of your house? Why separate ministry and life or worse, define them inappropriately one-sided? Why not be home and share your home (family, friends, couches and food) with more people alongside your wife? Why not let your kids see how you function daily, weaknesses and strengths and struggles instead of putting on a mediocre show once a week for them. Why not love your spouse by running the race with her/him instead of practically living as single parents, bachelors and the like 6 days a week. Is that what it means to sacrifice for the Kingdom?

Why does it have to be one or the other? I understand that for those who don't know Christ there is no tomorrow should they not wake up and this is cause for movement. I understand that we're called to make disciples and that this call is with power and might and action oriented. That the time for disciplemaking is now and not later. But He is in control of that right?

But I also understand that you and I have chosen marriage and families and so must honor these relationships not just in theological theory but in practical affection. I understand that a family on mission will display the very love of God that Christ promises as the Church is truly united one framily at a time. Are non-Christians truly clamoring to get involved in the church in order that they might get really, really busy and burned out? Probably not. But no matter how much doubt, pain and dysfunction might surround you in your neighborhood, a loving and inviting framily actually doing life in Christ together will be much more inviting than, well than that Easter concert you're spending all your evenings on, even that really sweet small group your leading.

I know culture moves fast and entrepreneurship is praised and prized. I know everyone is always connected. I know our comments move at lightening speed and technology is bolstering our connectedness...I know.

I know that speed, that quick decisions, that lots of money, that big enterprises, aggressive leadership (but humble...), that pop culture, that consumerism, that short attention spans...that all of these things are culturally sought after both in and outside of the church.

But what if.

It isn't Quality over Quantity. It's both. It's Qualantity...It's both on purpose and with purpose. And it's so good.
